CULTURE NIGHT 2014 EXPLORE - EXPERIENCE - ENJOY
DLCS Is delighted to get together again with Shaun Davey, Rita Connolly and friends to perform Davey's Songs from the High Seas at the brand new Central Library and Cultural Centre in Dun Laoghaire on Culture Night 2014 at 6.30pm
Originally commissioned by Dun Laoghaire Choral Society in 2011, thanks to funding from DLRCoCo, this suite of Sea Shanties composed by Shaun Davey was premiered at the National Concert Hall to a sell-out crowd in March 2012.
The suite is intended to suggest a collection of songs that might have been sung on a voyage, or series of voyages, around the world in the days of sailing ships.
Mostly the words are inspired by traditional shanty lyrics from different regions and typically these make light of the physical and mental hardship which was an inevitable part of the sailors’ life. Short on vocabulary, often in the vernacular, such songs did not need to be clever, just memorable, rhythmic and easy to sing while exhaling hard!
Dun Laoghaire Choral Society is delighted to perform these rousing shanties again on Culture Night with Shaun Davey, Rita Connolly and some of Ireland's best folk instrumentalists, including Liam O'Flynn, Eoin O Beaglaioch and Des Moore, amongst others.
This is a free, non-ticketed event and all are welcome!
Culture Night is brought to you by the Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht in partnership with Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown
