DLCS Spring Baroque concert featuring Bach, Albinoni and Handel
Sunday 6th April. at 4pm in Monkstown Church of Ireland
Concert Programme
The concert will begin with Johann Sebastian Bach's Jesu, meine Freude (BWV 227), the longest and most musically complex of Bach's six motets. This comforting and at times cheerful motet was written in 1723 for the funeral of Johanna Maria Käsin, the wife of Leipzig’s postmaster.
The concert will follow with the much-loved Albinoni Adagio in G minor, performed by organist Fergal Caulfield. This popular and well-known piece has a complicated history, with questions about who, in fact, composed it. Although typically referred to as the Albinoni Adagio, the work was largely composed by musicologist, Remo Giazotto, who based it on a 'Trio Sonata' composed by Tomaso Albinoni. This popular piece will be familiar to many audiences who may have heard it in a film score or the version recorded by rock band, The Doors in 1968.
The final piece for this progamme is Georg Friedrich Handel's exuberant and rich Dixit Dominus (HWV 232). Composed by Handel when he was just 22 years old, this piece is known for its festive richness, leaving audiences moved, invigorated and uplifted by the stylistic variety of the work.
